Munshi Premchand, originally named Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindustani literature. He was born on 31 July 1880, in Lamhi, a small village near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father, Ajaib Lal, was a post office clerk, and his mother, Anandi Devi, was a homemaker. Tragically, he lost his mother at the age of eight, and his father remarried, but he had a difficult relationship with his stepmother.
